Our main objective was to scan the basement for refurbishment purposes. We decided to scan the surface as well to ensure precise connection with the surface reference system and also to verify the crosscheck the total station survey against the point cloud.

It is truly rewarding to see how our work helps to transform and revitalise spaces. One interesting part of our job is figure out the best surveying method, how to combine the use of different technologies, laser scanners and traditional survey methods. Our surveyors love this task: explore the site, figure out how to scan it, how to build the reference system and close all the gaps that might occur. We recently had a good example of this type of work at Shepherd’s Bush Green where we had to survey part of the park and the basement underneath.
In this project, we faced situations which are considered bad use cases for standard terrestrial scanning: narrow-spaced, dark rooms and black surfaces. In this tricky situation, we utilised our NavVis VLX scanner and easily addressed these challenges. The black wall reduced the intensity for sure, but we mitigated this effect by getting closer to the wall and the narrow rooms were also meant no issue thankfully to the slam technology.
The other advantage – both for us and the client – is the NavVis Ivion tool, which allows to give online access to our client to navigate through the scanned area like in Google Streetview. Custom measurements can be made and a visual checks can be performed over all corners of the structure.
In addition to generating the premium-quality 3D topographical survey drawing, we extracted all the information requested by the client from the point cloud: the floor plan, ceiling plan, elevation plan and cross-sections.
