Why Potholes are Plaguing British Roads and Budgets

Each year, approximately 1.4 million potholes undergo repairs in England and Wales, equating to one fixed every 22 seconds. Potholes result from water entering existing cracks in our roads, expanding when frozen, and causing the road surfaces to crumble. This process leads to the emergence of potholes. In 2022 alone, nearly £100 million was allocated for pothole repairs, with an additional £23 million spent on compensation (Figures from the 28th ALARM Survey, published 21/03/23). While localised pothole repairs serve as the fastest and most cost-effective solution, emphasising prevention is crucial for long-term cost savings.

Resurfacing Paves the Way for Long-Term Road Health

In instances where the road surface condition necessitates complete resurfacing, careful planning can reduce future maintenance costs and enhance the longevity of the new surface.

Potholes are more prone to develop in areas where water has a sluggish surface runoff or accumulates, allowing it to gradually inflict damage. Resurfacing provides the opportunity to enhance the road profile and introduce level adjustments.

Optimise Your Resurfacing Project from the Ground Up

We offer a specialised surfacing package that enhances your project's value and cost-efficiency with minimal additional costs by:

  • Eliminating the risk of repeat of work due to ponding issues after surfacing

  • Identifying sunken or damaged sections of kerb and recommend solutions

  • Assessing existing surface gradients and suggesting enhancements to road levels by creating clear drawings

  • Supporting your project planning with precise information on the size of surfacing area, the quantity, size, condition and ownership of utility covers

  • Assisting in budget planning by calculating expected plane-off and material quantities

  • Providing accurate setting out for your surfacing team on site

  • Offering post-project as-built surveys and volumetric calculations

When you choose TopoCrew for your surfacing project, you will receive the highest standard of service. Our team consists of experienced engineers and surveyors and has completed over 600 surfacing projects in Central London. Our process has been developed and refined over the years and optimised for maximum efficiency and quality.

Surfacing Package Benefits and Cost Savings

TopoCrew's surfacing package consists of five strategic phases to pave the way for a flawless, efficient surfacing project.

1. Skeleton Survey

Five Key Services to Ensure Your Surfacing Project's Success

This initial step involves a rapid yet precise survey of the road surface, carefully considering measured points to accurately represent the key features, flaws, and characteristics of the road. It includes:

  • Top of kerb levels

  • Channel levels adjacent to the kerb

  • Camber lines

  • Road markings

  • Utility covers

  • Anti-skid areas

  • Ramps

  • Islands

This diagram illustrates the significance of measuring intermediate points between the channel and the camber.

Our level assessment process focuses on typical carriageway issues such as potholes, sunken sections of the road, and damaged kerbs.

  • The first step involves a gradient analysis of the carriageway using CAD software, which identifies ponding issues and provides accurate feedback on longitudinal falls.

  • Subsequently, we address any ponding issues by adjusting gradients while highlighting the impact of these adjustments on the road surface. This ensures consistent gradients on the road surface, facilitating ease of construction for the surfacing team.

  • We may recommend relaying sunken or damaged kerbs, raising or lowering gullies, and implementing significant level changes. In the subsequent phase, before leaving our desk, every design undergoes a thorough review to address major issues, significantly improving the road's geometry.

Any significant problems requiring further investigation are presented to you through a detailed technical query accompanied by technical advice for optimal solutions.

2. Level Assessment

Setting out from our own drawings is always the optimal choice. Setting out the surfacing works, relying on the same reference points from which the initial survey was done, ensures maximum accuracy and eliminates any chance of discrepancies.

The new surface levels on the camber are marked up, and the levels next to the channel are marked on kerbs. In certain cases, we also mark intermediate 2m drivelines if the road exceeds the finish paver's work width. If unforeseen circumstances lead the surfacing team to deviate from the original design, our highly skilled engineers can assess the impact of the changes and make necessary adaptations to ensure alignment with the original design. We have encountered such situations multiple times, often due to challenges in achieving the intended plane-off amount.

4. Setting Out

Our survey results enable us to compile a comprehensive inventory of utility covers in the surfacing area. The list includes details such as the ownership, size, and condition of each cover, providing valuable information to assist in your project planning.

3. Utility Cover List

TopoCrew offers comprehensive as-built documentation upon request. This includes the initial survey levels, plane off levels, base course and binder levels, final surfacing levels, and road markings mapping. Additionally, we can provide:

  • Detailed volume and area calculations

  • Thickness heat maps

  • Before-after heat maps

  • A final levels survey report
